April 7, 2008

NORMAN, Okla. – Despite strong Oklahoma winds, the University of Kansas women’s golf team posted a third-round 294 to finish in third place at the 30th annual Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the 6,013-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Led by sophomore Emily Powers, the Jayhawks improved four spots in the team leaderboard from Sunday’s first and second rounds to close regular season play.

Powers repeated her second-round 73, Monday, to post a final score of 223, good enough to tie in 14th place. Finishing just two strokes behind, freshman Meghna Bal fired a sub-par 71 in the third and final round to tie in 17th place with a final score of 225.

Tournament host Oklahoma claimed both individual and team titles as the Sooners led the 16-team field with a composite score of 885, edging out runner-up Arkansas-Little Rock by four strokes. Oklahoma’s Kendall Dye was also able to maintain her tournament lead throughout all three rounds, sharing medalist honors with Oral Roberts’ Christy Carter, each posting two-under-par scores of 214.

Completing her second event of the spring season, sophomore Camilla Svensson completed the day with third-round 76 to combine for a final score of 227 and place in a tie for 21st.

Freshman Grace Thiry and senior Annie Giangrosso round out the Jayhawk field, each carding final scores of 229 and 230, good enough to tie in 29th and 31st place, respectively.

Freshman Sydney Wilson, who was competing unattached, fired a tournament-best round of 76 to end the day in a tie for 63rd place with a final score of 240.

The Jayhawks will next look ahead to their post season, beginning with the Big 12 Championship, which is slated to take place April 25-27 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
