A walk-off home run lifted No. 7/8 Missouri over Kansas 5-4 in game one of a softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at University Field. KU and Missouri will complete the doubleheader tonight with the second game beginning at approximately 6 p.m.

Leading 4-2 through six and a half innings, Kansas gave up a homer to MU’s Jenna Marston in the bottom of the seventh inning to score three runs and give the Tigers the win as they improved to 26-6 and 2-3 in the Big 12.

The loss dropped KU to 16-20 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Things look promising for KU as junior Brittany Hile hit her fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to score two runs and give the Jayhawks a 3-1 lead.

Missouri tallied a run in the bottom of the frame to cut its deficit to one but Kansas freshman Rosie Hull hit one of her two singles of the game up the middle in the seventh inning to score her twin sister Maggie Hull and increase KU’s lead to 4-2.

Unfortunately the Tigers led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and a walk to put two runners on base before both runners were batted home on Marston’s round-tripper.

Kansas scored first engineering a run in the top of the third inning with an error and two hits. Freshman Maggie Hull led off the frame with an error to reach first base. After back-to-back singles, freshman Mariah Montgomery scored Hull on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop.

The Tigers put its first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI double to tie the score at one a piece.

Senior Sarah Vertelka pitched all seven innings for the Jayhawks. The right-handed pitcher walked five and struck out three as she dropped to 6-12 from the circle. MU out-hit Kansas eight to six during the game.
