Thompson Powers Kansas Past Creighton, 5-4

Junior Tony Thompson’s RBI double in the top of the ninth broke a four-all tie and lifted Kansas to a 5-4 triumph over Creighton Wednesday night at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Jayhawks win their second one-run game against Creighton this year and improve to 19-10-1 overall, while the Bluejays fall to 14-9.
Just as they did in the March 23 meeting, Kansas and Creighton entered the ninth inning knotted at four. With one out, Price started the KU rally, doubling down the right field line and moved to third on a single by Brian Heere. That set the stage for Thompson, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the game.
The Kansas third baseman laced a 1-2 double to left field to produce the winning run. It was Thompson’s first game-winning RBI this season, while his two-hits broke him out of a three-game hitless streak.
Kansas led 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh on the strength of a two-run triple by Jimmy Waters. However, Creighton scored three unearned runs off the Kansas bullpen in the inning to tie the game at four.
Freshman Tanner Poppe came in and retired the final hitter in the seventh and pitched a perfect eighth to earn his second victory of the season. Colton Murray allowed a one-out walk but induced a game-ending double play off the bat of T.J. Roemmick for his second save.
Kansas pitchers held Creighton to one earned run on six hits while collecting 10 strikeouts.
Thompson was one of three Jayhawks with two hits in the game. Price collected a pair of doubles to give him a team-high 13 this season, and extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Kansas (19-10-1) will travel to No. 6 Texas this weekend to open a three-game series in Austin, Texas Friday at 6:05 p.m.
