Kansas Women's Golf to Compete in Knights and Pirates Invitational

April 7, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s golf team will conclude its spring season after two weeks of rest when it competes in the Knights and Pirates Invitational April 9-10 at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla. This is the Jayhawks last tournament before hosting the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship at Lawrence Country Club April 27-29.

Senior Katy Nugent, along with junior Audrey Yowell, sophomores Meghan Potee and Thanuttra Boonraksasat and freshman Michelle Woods will represent the Jayhawks in the tournament hosted jointly by Central Florida and East Carolina. Gabriella DiMarco will compete as an individual after finishing tied for 79th at the MountainView Collegiate.

The Jayhawks are coming off a 14th place finish at the MountainView Collegiate led by Nugent who finished tied for 37th. Head coach Erin O’Neil knows that discipline will be a vital part in the Jayhawks performing well this week.

“Our goal each day will be to play within ourselves,” coach O’Neil said. “We need to be mentally tough, and have the discipline to make the decisions that will put us in the best position to succeed on the course.”

This will be the first time the Jayhawks will be competing at the Knights and Pirates Invitational. Playing on a new course could be difficult for any team so coach O’Neil knows the team needs to take everything in during the practice rounds to get as much knowledge as they can.

“We haven’t played this tournament before,” coach O’Neil said. “Therefore it will be imperative that we learn as much as we can from our practice round.”

The 15-team field includes Big 12 foe Texas Tech along with Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Boston College, Chattanooga, Florida International, Furman, Georgia State, James Madison, South Florida and 32-ranked Purdue.

Live scoring for the two-day tournament will be available at golfstat.com and daily results will be posted to kuathletics.com.
