STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State catcher Jared Womack went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Cowboys to an 11-1 triumph over Kansas, sending the Jayhawks to their third-straight defeat Saturday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Jayhawks fall to 12-18 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while the Cowboys improve to 16-14 and 4-5 league play.
Junior Kevin Kuntz drove in KU’s only run of the game with a two-out RBI single to left field in the seventh inning. Senior Zac Elgie recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.
Starting pitcher Wes Benjamin was wild, but effective through five innings, allowing just one run on three hits with five walks. However, he allowed three unearned runs in the sixth, which ended his day.
Oklahoma State got on the board in the third inning as a walk and a single set up Mark Ginther’s RBI double off the left field wall. Freshman Michael Suiter collected KU’s 10th outfield assist of the season, throwing out Robbie Rea at the plate.
The Cowboys broke things open in the sixth. After an error, a fielder’s choice and another error loaded the bases with nobody out, first baseman Wes Jones doubled off the wall in left field to drive in two runs. A fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Womack gave the home team a 5-0 lead.
OSU sent 10 men to the plate in the seventh and scored six runs, highlighted by Womack’s bases clearing double to win going away.
Kansas will look to salvage the final game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
