Battle Finishes Third in Shot Put at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas –

Highlighted by a third-place result in Section A of the men’s shot put from senior Sheldon Battle, the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. Battle’s throw of 64 feet, 4 inches, gave him the finish, besting three Big 12 rivals in the process. The toss was also a regionally-qualifying mark. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The women’s distance medley relay team of Melissa O’Rourke, Tiffany Bradley, Angela Pichardo and Dena Seibel turned in a time of 11 minutes, 48.35 seconds, good for a fifth-place finish. The men’s team, which consisted of Joshy Madathil, Matt Baysinger, Cameron Schwehr and Julius Jiles, finished seventh overall in a time of 9:56.10.

Competing in the javelin, senior Denita Young heaved a throw of 148-10. The toss was easily a regionally-qualifying performance and gave her a seventh place result in the event.

Freshman Stephanie Horton, throwing in Section A of the women’s shot put, turned in a toss of 47-5 1/4. The throw, which also surpassed the regional standard, gave her a 10th place result.

The track and field teams will travel to Columbia, Mo., next weekend for the Tom Botts Invitational on April 14 and 15. They will then return to Lawrence for the 79th annual Kansas Relays at Memorial Stadium on April 20-22.
