Kansas Falls to Kansas State in the Kansas Cup, 13-8

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas rowing team lost the Kansas Cup, 13-8, as it hosted in-state rival Kansas State Saturday morning on the Kansas River at Burcham Park. Kansas State remains the holder of the Kansas Cup trophy for the second-straight year.

“Kansas State was really good competition,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “They are ahead of us competitively with races at Texas and San Diego. “

Earning Kansas its only victory of the day, the First Varsity Eight, which included coxswain Ardis Johnson, team captain Jennifer Ebel, Lindsey Miles, Kris Lazar, Tiffany Jeffers, Alexis Boston, Kara Boston, LlynnAnn Laugesen and Tayler Eldridge, raced to the finish line in 6:14.8, beating Kansas State (6:16.9) by 2.1 seconds. The Second Varsity Eight came up short by 9.2 seconds to place second behind Kansas State (6:26.2) with 6:35.4.

In the Varsity Four, head-to-head action saw Kansas finish just a half-second behind Kansas State (7:19.9) at 7:20.4. Kansas State also took the Novice Eight in a time of 6:32.6 to top three Kansas boats.

The Jayhawks will continue the spring season as they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., on April 14-15 to compete at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship.
