KU Tennis Knocks Off No. 70 Missouri with Help of Freshman Windom

April 8, 2011

Kansas tennis freshman Dylan Windom proved her reliability in the clutch once again, when she took a tough third set from No. 70 Missouri’s Jamie Mera that clinched a 4-3 Border Showdown win for KU, Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

Windom not only earned her second match-clinching win of the season but also helped KU to its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the Jayhawks upset a 70th-ranked Oklahoma team March 29, 2009. It also snapped a five-game losing streak to the Tigers and was the first victory over the border rivals in exactly five years.

Kansas claimed its second Big 12 victory of the season and now stands at 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Missouri fell to 10-8 on the season and 2-6 in league play.

The Jayhawks split the first two doubles matches with the Tigers. In the No. 1 match, the No. 73-ranked KU duo of Ekaterina Morozova and Windom quickly downed No. 59 Mallory Weber and Marlen Hacke. After Erin Wilbert and Sara Lazarevic fell in the second doubles match, the point came down to a tense third doubles match. Paulina Los and Monica Pezzotti battled Rachel Stuhlmann and Mera to a tiebreaker, but fell 9-7, giving the doubles point to Missouri.

The rest of the match would play out in similar fashion. No. 65-ranked Morozova easily disposed of Mallory Weber, 6-0, 6-2, to tie the match at 1-1, but the Tigers came back to take a 2-1 lead after Katilyn Ritchie defeated Pezzotti in No. 2 singles, but Wilbert tied things up at 2-2 with a fourth-singles win over Hacke.

The match then remained tied for nearly two hours as the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles contests went into extra sets. Windom and Victoria Khanevskaya both won their first sets but Mera and Stuhlmann took set No. 2. Los topped Maria Christensen in the second set to force a decisive third set.

In the No. 3 spot, Los was able to pull through in the third set with a score of 6-3 to tie the match for the third time. After Victoria Khanevskaya fell to Stuhlmann in the sixth match, leaving Windom and Mera to decide the outcome.

Mera started out on top and Windom quickly fell behind 3-1. But the freshman won the next three games to go up 4-3. The match then evened at 4 and again at 5, and darkness forced the final games inside.

But once play was resumed, Windom wasted no time in dominating Mera in the final set, ultimately ending with a final 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

KU will continue its home weekend Sunday against Colorado, with a match time slated for 11 a.m., at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
