The University of Kansas soccer program announced its 2007 regular season schedule Monday. Of the Jayhawks’ 20 regular season matches, 11 will be against teams that made the 2006 NCAA Tournament.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Jayhawks will face six teams who were ranked in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll, including Texas A&M (#5), Portland (#6) and Texas (#8), who were all ranked in the top ten. Only three of KU’s non-conference foes did not participate in the NCAA Tournament last season.

“This year’s schedule is the toughest that we have ever had,” KU head coach Mark Francis said. “It will challenge the players to perform at the highest level every game which will help us prepare for a tough Big 12 schedule and for the postseason.”

The Jayhawks will open the season in sunny Waipahu, Hawaii at the University of Hawaii Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1. KU will face host UH on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. and then challenge Auburn at 7 p.m. the following evening.

KU will then return home for a pair of out-of-conference battles against NCAA Tournament participants Brigham Young and SMU on Sept. 6 and Sept. 9. The Thursday match against BYU is set for 5 p.m., while Sunday’s contest kicks off at 1 p.m.

The Jayhawks will hit the road again the following weekend, taking on perennial power Portland and Washington at the Portland Tournament, Sept. 14-16. Kansas will return to the friendly confines of the Jayhawk Soccer Complex for three non-conference matches before beginning Big 12 play on Sept. 28.

In KU’s three home matches, it will take on Missouri State (Sept. 18), Illinois (Sept. 21) and California-Berkeley (Sept. 23). The Missouri State and Illinois matches will kick off at 5 p.m., while the Jayhawks and Bears will tangle at 1 p.m.

KU will be on the road for the first two weekends of conference play, traveling to Baylor and Texas A&M on Sept. 28-30 and returning to the Lone Star State to face Texas Tech on Oct. 7. KU’s final non-conference match of the regular season will be on Oct. 5 at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Jayhawks’ first conference weekend at home will pit the team against Oklahoma State (Oct. 12) and Oklahoma (Oct. 14). KU split with the Oklahoma schools last season.

KU’s most difficult trip of the season will likely come the following weekend, when it travels to Colorado (Oct. 19) and Texas (Oct. 21). Both Big 12 teams advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season.

The Jayhawks will wrap up the regular season with home matches against Nebraska (Oct. 26), Iowa State (Oct. 28) and Missouri (Nov. 2). Times for all Big 12 matches have not yet been determined.

The Big 12 Championships will be Nov. 7-11 in San Antonio, with the NCAA Tournament beginning Nov. 16.

KU finished 2006 with a record of 11-7-1, and placed fourth in the Big 12. The Jayhawks are expected to return nine starters from last year’s squad.
