Jayhawks Win In Stillwater, 3-1

STILLWATER, Okla. –

Freshman pitcher Christina Ross struck out nine and led the University of Kansas softball team to a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma State Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium. The win marked the Jayhawks’ first in Big 12 Conference play.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

With the win, KU improved to 17-16 overall and 1-5 in league play, while OSU dropped to 28-13 and 3-4 in Big 12 action.

KU scored its three runs on two hits in the second inning. Ashley Goodrich reached on a fielder’s choice and Serena Settlemier walked with one out to bring up Nettie Fierros. Fierros tripled to right center to score the runners and later scored on a single by Jackie Vasquez.

The Cowgirls scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Shanel Scott reached on a catching error by Jessica Moppin and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A base hit by Megan Carey scored Scott but Ross was able to strike out the last two batters with bases loaded to end the inning.

Ross (6-5) tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, gave up five hits and walked one in the complete-game victory. OSU starter Jessica Hoppock (12-8) gave up three hits, walked four and struck out one in 1.1 innings. Reliever Randi Cook struck out two and allowed just one hit in the final 5.2 innings.

The KU offense recorded four hits and stranded just three on base. Heather Stanley and Destiny Frankenstein added KU’s other base hits in the win.

KU will next be in action Wednesday when it travels to Columbia, Mo., to face Border Showdown rival Missouri. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
