Czyz' Records are Icing on the Cake for KU

April 10, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Added to the excitement of Kansas winning its second straight Big 12 series with a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech on Sunday, April 9, was the fact that for the second straight outing, KU senior closer Don Czyz etched his name in the Big 12 and KU record books.

After earning the save in KU’s 5-3 victory in its series opener on Friday, April 7, the Overland Park, Kan., native tied the Big 12 record for career appearances set by Baylor’s Zane Carlson (2000-04) with 111. Czyz also tied the Kansas single season record for saves with 11 set by Jimmy Walker in 1993 during KU’s magical run to the College World Series.

Czyz wasted no time breaking the records he tied. On Sunday, the right-hander entered the game in the eighth inning and slammed the door on any thoughts Texas Tech had of making a comeback in route to picking up his NCAA best 12th save of the season.

The appearance also broke Carlson’s Big 12 record and leaves Czyz three appearances shy of cracking the NCAA top 20 for career relief appearances.
