<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>LAWRENCE, Kan. – 400-meter hurdles World Outdoor Champion, Bershawn Jackson, is set to run the same event at the 81st annual Kansas Relays April 16-19. Jackson was the 2005 World Outdoor Champion in the event and is the three-time defending champion in the Invitational 400-meter hurdles at the Kansas Relays. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Jackson will compete in the Invitational 400-meter hurdles scheduled for Saturday at 4:35 p.m. The 24-year-old has won the event four times in the last five years. In addition to winning the event at the last three Relays, he also took home the title in 2003. With his victory in 2006, Jackson set the meet record with a finish of 48.34, breaking the record he had set a year earlier.
USA Track and Field considers Jackson “the newest phenom over the intermediate hurdles.” A native of Miami, Fla., Jackson won the 2003 USA Outdoor Championship and the 2005 USA Indoor 400-meter Championship. He was the USA Outdoor runner-up in 2006.
Each year since 2003, Jackson has been ranked in the top ten in the world by Track & Field News in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. After missing the 2004 Olympic team at the age of 20, Jackson will set his sights toward the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The Kansas Relays begin Wednesday, April 16 and finish Saturday, April 19. Admission into the meet will be allowed only by those people wearing a 2008 Kansas Relays button. Buttons will cost $10 for adults and are good for admission for all four days of the Kansas Relays. Children under the age of five and KU students are free. A 30% group discount will be applied to all orders of 20 or more adult Kansas Relays admission buttons. Discount buttons for Senior Citizens and all students with a valid ID are $5.
