Current American Record Holder Wallace Spearmon, Jr. to Run at Kansas Relays

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>LAWRENCE, Kan. – Wallace Spearmon, Jr., the current American record holder in the indoor 200-meter dash, will run in two events at the 81st Annual Kansas Relays April 16-19. Spearmon, Jr. is expected to run in both the Invitational 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay. Each race is scheduled for Saturday, April 19with the 800-meter relay at 12:10 p.m. and the 400-meter relay at 2:25 p.m. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

In 2007, Spearmon won a Gold medal at the World Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter relay, a Bronze medal in the 200-meter dash and was the USA outdoor runner-up in the 200 meters.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Arkansas and a Fayetteville, Ark., native, Spearmon, Jr. was a three-time NCAA Champion in the 200 meters and also won the 2006 USA Outdoor Championship in the same event.

At the age of 20, Spearmon, Jr. broke the American record in the indoor 200-meter dash on two occasions at the 2005 NCAA Championships. His time of 20.21 in the semifinals of the event broke the record of 20.26 shared by John Capel and Shawn Crawford. He then broke his own record in the finals with a time of 20.10.

Admission into the meet will be allowed only by those people wearing a 2008 Kansas Relays button. Buttons will cost $10 for adults and are good for admission for all four days of the Kansas Relays. Children under the age of five and KU students are free. A 30% group discount will be applied to all orders of 20 or more adult Kansas Relays admission buttons. Discount buttons for Senior Citizens and all students with a valid ID are $5. A Kansas Relays Family Pack consisting of two adult and two student admissions will be offered for just $20.
