Junior Tandem Guides Jayhawks During Round One at the River Landing Intercollegiate

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Juniors Walt Koelbel and Zach Pederson shot a pair of 74’s to lead the Kansas men’s golf team during the first round of the River Landing Intercollegiate. The team opened up with a first-round 299 at the River Course at River Landing and is tied for 12th place after day one.
“We played decent today on a pretty good golf course,” said head coach Kit Grove. “We made some mistakes on the last few holes which really hurts our final number, but hopefully we can improve on that tomorrow.” Both Koelbel and Pederson featured rounds that included two birdies on the day. After round one they are tied for 31st place. Freshman Brad Hopfinger shot an opening-round 75 to finish day one tied for 39th place. Fellow freshman Nate Barbee shot an opening-round 76 to finish tied for 49th place. Sophomore Patrick Roth carded a first-day 82 and is currently in 82nd place. The round marks Roth’s first appearance in a tournament since the St. Mary’s Invitational. The first round was delayed for 90 minutes this morning due to fog. Florida St. and Duke are currently tied atop the team leaderboard after carding first-round scores of 284. Seven of the 15 participating schools in the event, including leaders Florida St. and Duke, are in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The second round will begin at 8 EST Saturday morning.
