April 11, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan.For the third consecutive year the University of Kansas rowers will converge on Cherry Hill, N.J., for the Knecht Cup. The regatta is split into two days of competition this Saturday and Sunday. The Knecht Cup features 34 different events in men’s and women’s collegiate divisions. Athletes from over 60 institutions will participate.

Kansas will compete in the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, First Varsity Four, Open Four and Novice Eight. Saturday is used as a qualifier for the final races on Sunday. Twelve boats in each event advance to Sunday. The Grand Final will match the top six qualifiers from Saturday against each other while the Petite Final includes the next six qualifiers.

“We are hoping to be in a position to make the Grand Final in all of our events,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “This is the time of year where we traditionally start to really gain speed. We have developed our depth and we just have fun and embrace the type of racing at this event.”

The Jayhawks qualified for four Grand Finals last year with the First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four winning gold medals.
