Jayhawks Fall to Wichita State, 5-1

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior first baseman Andy Scholl connected on his third home run of the season, but it was not enough to lift the University of Kansas baseball team to a victory as they fell 5-1 to Wichita State on Wednesday at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
The loss drops the Jayhawks overall record this season to 24-15 and knots their season series with the Shockers this year at one game apiece. The two teams will meet two more times this season – April 20 at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence and May 4 at Eck Stadium in Wichita.
In the bottom of the first inning, Shocker first baseman Derek Schermerhorn gave his team the lead and extended his career-long hitting streak to 32 games as he singled up the middle to bring home the first run of the game. Catcher Joe Muich added an RBI single later in the frame as WSU built a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Sophomore Sean Land started for KU and allowed only two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work.
Scholl tallied the only Kansas in the top of the second inning as he connected on his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, to cut the WSU lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Shockers pressed their lead to 3-1 on a RBI double off the bat of right fielder Matt Brown.
The Jayhawks were able to load the bases in the top of the eighth inning against WSU reliever Nate Booth, but were unable to cash in as senior catcher Sean Richardson fouled out to end the threat.
Kansas baseball is back in action this weekend as they host No. 12 Baylor in a Big 12 series at Hoglund Ballpark.
