Jayhawks Fall at No. 33 Texas A&M, 6-1

COLLEGE STATION, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Texas — Playing in its final road dual of the regular season, the University of Kansas tennis team fell to 33rd-ranked Texas A&M, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. The loss drops KU’s record to 7-12 (3-6), while the Aggies improved to 14-6 (8-1).<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Jayhawks’ only win in the dual was in the No. 4 singles contest, where sophomore Kunigunda Dorn snapped a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over A&M’s Tiffany Clifford. The Sopron, Hungary, native now has eight singles wins in dual play.
Texas A&M opened the day by taking all three doubles matches to go up 1-0. Dorn and senior Lauren Hommell played well in the No. 2 contest but could not hold of the Aggies’ Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter, falling 8-6.
Each of A&M’s six singles victories came in straight sets with the exception of the No. 3 match, where KU’s Edina Horvath — who has been the team’s top singles player this season — took Anna Blagadorova to three sets. However, the Budapest, Hungary, native fell in a pro-set tiebreaker in the deciding set, 1-0 (5).
After setting out singles play against Texas on Friday due to lingering ankle problems, senior Elizaveta Avdeeva returned to the lineup on Sunday. However, she dropped the No. 2 contest in straight sets to Liles.
Hommell saw her perfect season in the No. 6 position come to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 setback at the hands of A&M’s Stephanie Davidson.
KU will look to get back on track next weekend when it closes out the regular season with home duals against Nebraska and IowaState. The Jayhawks will face the Huskers on Friday before honoring its senior class on Sunday prior to its match with ISU.
