Gilbert Leads KU to Tie for Fifth Finish at the Columbia Orthopaedic Group Missouri Intercollegiate

Chris Gilbert’s final round 74 propelled himself to his top career finish and the Kansas men’s golf team to a tie for fifth place at the Columbia Orthopaedic Group Missouri Intercollegiate.

Gilbert tied for ninth place, eclipsing his previous best finish which was a tied for 14th at the season-opening Fairway Club Invitational.

“We struggled a bit today, but I am really for happy for Chris to get a top-10 finish,” said head coach Kit Grove. “Chris has been struggling a bit and this hopefully will give him some momentum heading into the Big 12 Championship.”

The Jayhawks shot a 302 as a team and ended the tournament in a three-way tie for fifth place with Iowa State and Wyoming.

Freshman Alex Gutesha carded a 76 in round three to earn a tie for 27th place. Freshman Dan Waite and senior Bryan Hackenberg each shot final round 77’s to tie for 31st place.

Sophomore Blake Giroux wrapped up the event with a 75 and tied for 44th place.

Nebraska edged Kansas State by one stroke to win the team title. Kansas State’s Curtis Yonke beat Brandon Crick after four playoff holes to win medalist honors.

The regular season portion of the 2009-10 season has concluded for the Jayhawks and they will compete in the Big 12 Championship April 23-25 in Trinity, Texas. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage of the 2009-10 season.
