Bill Self Basketball Experience Underway

April 13, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – More than 50 participants have come to Allen Fieldhouse to fulfill a bucket list at the Bill Self Basketball Experience (BSBE) in Lawrence this weekend.

Though officially beginning Friday afternoon and running through Sunday, many of the participants, consisting of playing and non-playing competitors ages 35 and older, were among a camper-KU alumni exhibition contest Thursday evening in Allen Fieldhouse. Former Jayhawks who participated included Billy Thomas, Brady Morningstar, Tyshawn Taylor, Conner Teahan, Jordan Juenemann and Thomas Robinson.

Starting Friday afternoon, campers will receive expert coaching from current KU head coach Bill Self and his staff and former KU greats and enjoy elite social opportunities including an exclusive dinner at the home of Self. For non-playing participants, the BSBE offers the “Phog Allen Coaching Experience” that allows campers to see the inner workings of collegiate coaching at the highest level as they “match wits” with Self, a three-time national coach of the year who has guided KU to eight-straight conference titles, five conference tournament championships, two Final Fours and one national championship. Kansas is 197-29 over the last six seasons, which is the most victories in a six-year span in the history of NCAA Division I college basketball.

A portion of this weekend’s proceeds will go to Self’s Assist Foundation, founded in 2006 by Bill and Cindy Self, whose mission is to provide young people access to better lives.
