SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Kansas softball team improved its win streak to three with a 6-0 victory over Southwest Missouri State Thursday at the SMS Softball Field. Freshman lefty Christina Ross (7-5) struck out six and allowed just two hits as the Jayhawks improved to 19-16 overall.

Jessica Moppin put the Jayhawks on the board in the first with a solo home run, her sixth of the season, over the scoreboard in left field.

After her three-run homer Wednesday night at Missouri, Nettie Fierros continued her hitting heroics with a double off the center field wall with bases loaded. The double scored Heather Stanley (walk) and Moppin (fielder’s choice) to give KU the 3-0 advantage.

The Jayhawks added to their lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits and two SMS errors. Pinch hitter Ashley Goodrich singled, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice slap by Cyndi Duran. Jackie Vasquez notched an infield single to score Goodrich and came around to score after two consecutive errors.

Fierros hit her second home run in as many games, a solo shot to left center, to put KU on top, 6-0, in the top of the seventh.

Freshman lefty Christina Ross (7-5) threw five perfect innings to start the game before an error and single in the sixth. The complete-game shutout marked her second of the season.

KU totaled eight hits, including two from Fierros and Vasquez, but stranded nine on base.

Melissa Porsche (4-5) allowed five hits, struck out four and walked four in the first 4.2 innings while Samantha Fleeman finished the game with three hits and one strikeout. With the loss, SMS fell to 14-19 on the season.

KU will return home for a Big 12 Conference series against No. 8 Baylor this weekend. The Bears and Jayhawks will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.
