Cancer Survivor Carrie Rangel to Throw Out First Pitch at Sunday's Softball Game

April 14, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

On Sunday, April 17, the University of Kansas softball team will hold its Pink in the Park game when it welcomes Baylor to Arrocha Ballpark for a noon contest. The Jayhawks will use the game to raise money and awareness for cancer research and treatment at LawrenceMemorialHospital and the KU Cancer Center. In honor of the event, cancer survivor Carrie Rangel will throw out the first pitch.

Rangel was diagnosed with breast cancer over three years ago at the age of 31 after finding a lump in her breast. Following her diagnosis, she had chemo and a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction.

“I feel so blessed to have had such wonderful support of friends and family and great medical care right here in Lawrence during that time,” said Rangel. “My experience has taught me to not sweat the small stuff, cherish each birthday and realize just how blessed I am to be here each day.”

“My loving husband also shows great breast cancer awareness and support as he restored his 1978 Monte Carlo low-rider in bright pink to honor all breast cancer survivors, and to honor the memory of those who have lost their battle,” Rangel added.

Fans who wear pink to the game can gain entry for $3, while donations to LMH and KU Cancer Center will also be accepted. Several giveaways are planned for the game including pink bracelets and Jayhawk softball trading cards. Fans can stick around after the game for player autographs.
