Oklahoma State Powers Past KU, 19-7; 14 Homers Hit

Oklahoma State and Kansas brought the bats and Mother Nature supplied the wind leading to a combined 14 home runs in a 19-7 Cowboy victory Saturday in Stillwater, Okla. The 14 homers set a Big 12 record and are the fourth most ever hit by two teams in an NCAA Division I game.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

KU sophomore Erik Morrison, sophomore John Allman, senior Ritchie Price, senior Jared Schweitzer, junior Dylan Parzyk and junior Kyle Murphy all hit homers in the game. Morrison and Allman went back-to-back in the second inning while Parzyk and Murphy’s home runs in the ninth were back-to-back.

Ritchie Price’s fifth inning solo blast was the 274th hit of his career to tie Darryl Monroe for the most hits in Kansas baseball history.

OSU senior lefthander Brae Wright (4-2) pitched 8.1 innings, striking out six to pick up his fourth win of the season. KU senior Ricky Fairchild suffered the loss, dropping his record to 4-4 on the year.

Already leading 8-2 after three innings, OSU tagged on seven more runs before recorded an out in the fourth. The Cowboys used four hits including back-to-back-to-back home runs and five walks to take a 15-2 lead.

OSU’s Jordy Mercer and Tyler Mach each hit two of the Cowboys’ eight home runs. Keanon Simon added an inside the park home run in second inning. The eight homers given up by KU pitching set a new Kansas record.

KU (24-15, 6-8 Big 12) and OSU (21-11, 5-6 Big 12) will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Kodiak Quick (6-2, 2.83) will toe the rubber for Kansas while Oklahoma State will counter with sophomore lefty Charles Benoit. Quick has won three-straight Big 12 games.

Game Notes: KU has hit back-to-back home runs four times this season … There have been 20 home runs hit in the first two games of the series … Keanon Simon’s inside the park homer was the first given up by KU since April 4, 1998 … KU is now 3-8 against Oklahoma State under Ritch Price … Oklahoma State improves to 14-2 at home on the season … OSU’s 19 runs were a KU opponent season high.
