LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas softball team defeated Texas Tech, 1-0, Saturday at Arrocha Ballpark to open the two-game Big 12 Conference series. With the victory, the Jayhawks improved to 22-20 overall and 3-6 in league play while the Red Raiders moved to 18-25 and 4-5.

Senior Jessica Moppin led KU at the plate with two hits while junior Kassie Humphreys (10-13) paced the Jayhawks in the circle with 10 strikeouts. The win halted a two-game skid for the Jayhawks and improved their home record to 6-4 on the season.

The Jayhawks scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first off three hits. Freshman Val Chapple and Moppin each singled and senior Serena Settlemier notched a base hit to left (RBI) to score Chapple from second, giving KU the early lead.

Tech got hits from its first four batters in the lineup and put runners on base on three KU errors. The Red Raiders left runners in scoring position in the last four innings and stranded a total of six on base in the loss.

Humphreys, the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, fanned 10 batters, allowed four hits and walked one in the complete-game shutout, her sixth of the season. Tech’s Erin Crawford (11-11) gave up five hits, struck out four Jayhawks and walked none in the effort.

KU and Tech will wrap up the series Sunday at noon. Two adults and two youth can watch the game for just $12 and after the contest, children can run the bases and get autographs. Fans can also participate in an Easter egg hunt.
