Kansas Rowing Takes Two to Conclude Southern IRA's

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>OAK RIDGE, Tenn.-The Kansas rowing team concluded the final day of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship on Saturday. Kansas placed first in both the Petite Finals of the JV Eight and Varsity Four.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Throughout the day’s events, Kansas competed in the Novice Four, Novice Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Varsity Eight on Melton Hill Lake’s 2,000-meter race course.

Kansas’ Second Varsity Eight finished first in the Petite Final of the JV Eight ahead of SMU, Tulsa, Purdue, Grand Valley State and Washington University. The Varsity Four claimed the top spot in the Petite Final as well.

The Jayhawks took fourth in Grand Final of the Novice Four just behind Miami, Georgia and Murray State, but topping Jacksonville and Louisville.

In the Grand Final of the Novice Eight the Jayhawks placed second, edged by in-state rival Kansas State.

The Grand Final of the Varsity Eight saw Kansas take fifth after Louisville, Sacramento State, Miami and Kansas State, but earn a better time than North Carolina.

“I was pleased with how everyone improved through each race,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “We will now turn our attention to our tough races ahead, and the girls are looking to be fully prepared for the rest of the season.”

The Jayhawks next travel to No. 18 Minnesota on Saturday, April 22.
