April 15, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas women’s basketball head coach Bonnie Henrickson announced the signing of Rhea Codio Wednesday, bringing the signing class total to six players. A guard from from Brooklyn, N.Y., Codio signed a national letter of intent to join the KU program beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.

“We are thrilled to have Rhea join our Kansas Basketball family,” said Henrickson, who recently completed her fifth season at the helm of the Jayhawk program. “Her ability to make plays in the half court and in transition make her a valuable asset to our program.”

Codio will join the Jayhawks after playing two stellar seasons at Independence (Kan.) Community College under head coach Tony Turner. The 5-foot-8 guard earned First Team All-Region VI honors and was also named First Team All-Jayhawk Conference following her sophomore season. She was also earned a spot on the Region VI All-Tournament Team for her play in the postseason tourney. Codio averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 assists per game during her second season at ICC.

Codio is a graduate of Frederick Douglass Academy in New York, where she earned three varsity letters in basketball under Roelethia Willis. Codio was a two-time Second Team All-City honoree at FDA.

Kansas, who returns four starters and eight overall letterwinners from last season’s 22-14 team, signed five players in the 2009-10 early signing period. In addition, the Jayhawks will also see the return of 2008 WBCA High School All-American Angel Goodrich, who missed the entire 2008-09 season with a torn ACL.
