Former Kansas Soccer Greats Return for Alumni Match

LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Kansas soccer continues its spring 2011 exhibition schedule this weekend with a scrimmage against former Jayhawk players in the alumni match. Players from as recent as 2010 and as early as 1998 will return to the Jayhawk Soccer Complex Saturday, for a 1 p.m., contest.
Three-time All-American Caroline Smith headlines the standout group. Smith’s name is all over the Kansas records books, as she holds the all-time records for points, goals, game-winning goals, assists, shots and shots on goal. The former forward led KU in goals from 2002-2004 and her 19 goals in 2003 still stands as the all-time single-season record. Off the field, Smith is also KU’s only ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, being named so twice, in 2004 and 2005.
Another one of KU’s five former All-Americans, Holly Gault, is also slated to return this weekend. A 2004 NSCAA All-Region and All-Big 12 First Team selection ranks in the top-10 on KU’s career charts nearly across the board in offensive categories.
Players from all four of KU’s NCAA Tournament teams will be represented, including the program’s first-ever postseason team. Four players from the 2001 season are slated to play, including Natalie Krueger. Formerly Natalie Hoogveld, as a senior in ’01 she helped lead the Jayhawks to their first-ever NCAA Tournament as the team’s third-leading scorer with eight goals and two assists.
Several members of the 2004 Big 12 Championship will also take the field, including current volunteer assistant coach Jessica Smith. Players from the recent classes of 2008-2010 will round out the team.
