April 16, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After victories against Kansas State and Tulane last week, the Kansas women’s tennis team (10-10, 4-5 in Big 12) will host its last two regular season opponents April 18-19 at First Serve Tennis Center. The Jayhawks will face the Texas Longhorns on April 18 at noon and the Texas A&M Aggies on April 19 at 11 a.m.

The Jayhawks won the Sunflower Showdown with Kansas State, 5-2, before taking a 6-1 decision over Tulane to even their record at 10-10. Kansas is currently eighth in the Big 12 standings, but wins this weekend would place it in the top half of the conference going into the postseason.

No. 32 Texas (12-6, 8-1 Big 12) boasts both a ranked singles player and a ranked doubles tandem. Vanja Corovic is No. 121in the nation in singles action and is also half of the No. 34-ranked duo with partner Marija Milic. UT’s Sarah Lancaster (9-0 in Big 12) will face KU freshman Erin Wilbert, who has won six straight singles matches at the No. 6 position.

Texas A&M (11-9, 7-2 Big 12) is ranked 35th in the nation after winning seven of its last eight matches. The Aggies’ only conference losses came in their Big 12 opener at Texas and at home against Baylor earlier this week. In the Baylor match, A&M’s player at the No. 2 position, Morgan Frank, suffered her only loss in Big 12 play this season.

Next up for KU will be the Big 12 Tennis Championships April 23-26 at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
