Current Players Top Former Jayhawks, 2-1, in Kansas Soccer Alumni Match

April 16, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kortney Clifton and Liana Salazar each scored for Kansas soccer’s current team while former All-American Caroline Smith netted one for the Alumni team in Saturday afternoon’s alumni soccer match at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Clifton started things off for the current team late in the first half. With just under five minute left in the first frame, the junior found the net with a deep blast from the right side. In the second half, a blocked shot led to Salazar’s goal when she knocked it in on the rebound.

The alumni team, which was coached by strength trainer Molly McKinnon, was led by Smith, Kansas’s all-time leader in points and goals scored and the program’s most decorated former player. Smith tried to lead an alumni rally late in the game when she cut the 2-0 deficit in half with only a few minutes left on the clock, but the Kansas defense thwarted all other attempts and hung on for the 2-1 win.

KU is now 3-2 for the spring 2011 exhibition season, and will play its final spring match Wednesday afternoon against the Kansas men’s club team. The match will be played at 5 p.m., at Free State High School.
