Six Rowers Awarded Conference USA Academic Medal

April 16, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Six University of Kansas rowers were recognized with one of the highest academic honors in Conference USA. The Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal is awarded to those C-USA student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better. A total of 538 student-athletes earned the medal during the 2012-13 academic year. KU rowers compete in both the Big 12 and Conference USA.

Rowers recognized were juniors Caty Clements (accounting), Jessie Jacob (political science) and Elizabeth Scherer (exercise science) along with freshmen Lauren Miller (accounting & economics), Morgan Thomsen (exercise science) and Kirsten Whitaker (mechanical engineering).

“Academics are always important, especially in an Olympic sport because there is no professional sport for them to go on to,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “The women on the team are here to get an education to prepare them for their career after college. Academics are an integral part of the team.”
