No. 9/9 Oklahoma State Defeats Jayhawks
April 17, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Despite a home run by freshman Mariah Montgomery, the Kansas softball team could not generate enough offensive support as the No. 9/9 Oklahoma State Cowgirls’ softball team defeated the Jayhawks 11-3 Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
With the loss, KU dropped to 18-25 overall and 1-9 in the Big 12. OSU extended a 15-game winning streak and improved its overall record to 38-7, including 8-0 in league play.
The Cowgirls recorded hits in just three innings but scored at least three runs each time. OSU posted four runs in each the first and third innings recording four hits and taking advantage of a KU error both times to take an 8-0 lead.
Montgomery scored the Jayhawks’ first run in the bottom of the third with a two-out solo home run. It marked her third round-tripper of the season and second in Big 12 games.
The score remained 8-1 until the fifth and final inning when Oklahoma State added three more runs on another four-hit frame.
The Cowgirls brought in pitcher Sarah Odom for the fourth inning and Kansas junior Brittany Hile hit a two-out single down the left field line to score senior Sara Ramirez and freshman Rosie Hull, who both reached on a walk.
OSU starter Anna Whiddon returned to the circle and gave up a base-hit before striking out the next KU batter to end the contest with two batters on base. Kansas also had a missed opportunity to score in the opening frame when it loaded the bases with no outs but failed to come up with a timely hit.
Kansas used all three pitchers in the contest but could not quiet Oklahoma State’s bats as the Cowgirls recorded 12 hits compared to KU’s four.
Kansas and Oklahoma State will wrap up the series on Sunday at noon. Fans in attendance can receive a free KU softball t-shirt while supplies last.
