April 18, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Relays meet director Tim Weaver will be the guest host on 1320 KLWN’s Rock Chalk Sports Talk program from 4-6pm on Thursday, April 21. Thursday is also the first day of Kansas Relays at Memorial Stadium. The event continues all day Friday and Saturday, highlighted by the GOLD ZONE from 2-5pm on the final day. Weaver will be answering caller questions, giving out prizes, and talking about the Relays and all things track and field. Several Olympians who will be competing in the GOLD ZONE will join him guests on the broadcast.

“We’re really excited about Tim hosting the show live from the Relays,” said Brian Hanni, host of Rock Chalk Sports Talk. “Tim was made for radio – and I’m not referring to his face. Seriously, his passion for track and field, his experience in the sport on the international level, and personality will shine through on the broadcast and do a great deal to raise awareness of just how special this year’s GOLD ZONE event will be.”

The 2005 Kansas Relays is playing host to the most Olympians in recent meet history and Weaver is hoping to bring in a record number of fans to witness the inaugural Kansas Relays GOLD ZONE. The show will run from 4-6pm on Thursday, April 21. Callers should call 785-843-1321.

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity to guest host such a popular program, especially as the Kansas Relays get underway,” said Weaver. “We have the greatest collection of Olympic talent in the history of the Kansas Relays. There are so many great stories to tell. Certainly Maurice Greene, Marion Jones, and Stacy Dragila are at the top of everyone’s list, but this show will allow us to look at the depth of the event – all three- dozen Olympians, plus the awesome high school and college action. Add to that a few special guests, call in questions, some great prizes and it should be quite a broadcast.”

The GOLD ZONE will run from 2-5 pm on Saturday, April 23. It is a new, fast-paced, three-hour format for the most popular events at the Kansas Relays. Featured athletes include Olympic Champions and World Record setters Maurice Greene, Marion Jones, and Stacy Dragila. Also highlighting the GOLD ZONE will be Olympic Champions Allen Johnson, Nick Hysong, Inger Miller, and Savatheda Fynes. Local Olympians include Muna Lee from Kansas City, Mo., Charlie Gruber of Lawrence, Kan., Derrick Peterson of Columbia, Mo., and Melvin Lister from Leavenworth, Kan.

The 78th Kansas Relays will run from April 21 – 23; the GOLD ZONE is Saturday, April 23 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. For more information on the Kansas Relays, a complete GOLD ZONE schedule, and ticket information, please visit http://kuathletics.collegesports.com/sports/c-relay/.
