Kansas Routs Missouri State, 19-7

The University of Kansas (26-15) sprinted to a 19-1 lead and came away with a 19-7 victory over Missouri State (19-14) Tuesday night at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan. KU’s victory will be shown tape delay Wednesday on Metro Sports at 7 p.m.

The Jayhawks scored their 19 runs – a season high – on 18 hits. KU pulled away from the Bears with five runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh before Missouri State put up six runs in the eighth.

Sophomore Brock Simpson went 3-for-4 on the night and scored three runs while driving in three. The Topeka, Kan., native was a double shy of being the first KU player to hit for the cycle since 1993.

Simpson hit the first of three KU home runs with a solo blast in the third inning. Sophomore John Allman added a solo homer in the fifth while senior Gus Milner capped KU’s seven run seventh with a three run home run.

Junior college transfer Brendan McNamara struck out a career-high five batters while going a career-best 6.0 innings to earn his first victory at KU. McNamara scattered seven hits while allowing one run and walking none.

Freshman Andy Marks pitched a perfect seventh inning before the Bears got to sophomore Matt Lane for six runs in the eighth. Freshman Paul Smyth pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the Jayhawk victory.

KU recorded nine extra base hits for a season-high 34 total bases. The Bears lined into two double plays and left five runners on base.

KU will next play Tabor College. Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark. After Wednesday’s game, KU will host Friday’s match up with Kansas State at 7 p.m. before the final two games shift to Manhattan.
