Victories by Bonds and Manning at Day Three of Kansas Relays

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>LAWRENCE, Kan. – At her final home meet as a Jayhawk, KU senior Crystal Manning was victorious in the triple jump at the Kansas Relays for the first time in her career. Sophomore Lauren Bonds also added a win in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase for the University of Kansas track and field teams at Day Three of the Kansas Relays on Friday.

Manning reached the regional qualifying mark on all three of her triple jump attempts. Though not topping her previous season-best, the Terrell, Texas, native won the event with her second throw jump of 12.93 meters (42 feet, 5 1/4 inches).
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Lauren Bonds led for the majority of the race and crossed the finish line at 11:02.83 to claim the 2008 Kansas Relays title. It was also the first time Bonds had won at Memorial Stadium since winning the sprint medley relay for HutchinsonHigh School in 2006.
“It’s really good to win,” the Hutchinson, Kan., native said. “The Kansas Relays is a really good meet, so I am happy with that.”
Junior Nickesha Anderson regionally qualified for the 100 meters and 400 meters in the preliminaries of both events. Her times of 11.70 in the 100 meters and 54.45 in the 400 meters were the fastest times in each prelim.
Freshman Keron Toussaint had the third-best time in the prelims of the men’s 400-meter dash to qualify for the finals on Saturday. Junior Sha’Ray Butler also moved on to the finals with her preliminary time of 1:03.04 in the 400 hurdles while Kansas’ women’s 1,600-meter relay team also reached Saturday’s finals.

The 81st edition of the Kansas Relays concludes Saturday, April 19. Admission into the meet will be allowed only by those people wearing a 2008 Kansas Relays button. Buttons cost $10 for adults. Children under the age of five and KU students are free. A 30% group discount will be applied to all orders of 20 or more adult Kansas Relays admission buttons. Discount buttons for Senior Citizens and all students with a valid ID are $5. A Kansas Relays Family Pack consisting of two adults and two student admissions will be offered for just $20.
