Kansas Rowing Takes Third in Varsity Four at SIRA's

LAWRENCE, Kan.–Kansas rowing took third in the Second Varsity Eight race and third in the Varsity Four race at the annual Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Sunday. Kansas had all five boats qualify on Saturday to take place in the grand finals on Sunday.

“I think we did really well,” said head coach Rob Catloth. “The 2V and 4V did really well. We’re hitting the middle of our season and working to get better.”

The First Varsity Eight boat placed sixth in a tough field that included the first ranked Grand Valley State boat and second ranked Purdue boat. The Novice Four and Novice 8 boats both finished fifth in their respective races.

“It was a good sized field in the varsity races with better quality opponents than last year,” said Catloth. “We showed a good team performance having all five boats make it to the grand final.”

On Saturday Kansas placed in the top 3 in all races that the Jayhawks entered. The Varsity Four boat placed first in its semifinal heat posting a time of 7:51. 90, almost a full 10 seconds ahead of second place Louisville. The Varsity Eight boat placed third in its qualifying heat just under 10 second behind first place Kansas State and only six seconds behind second ranked Purdue who finished the race second.

In novice action the Novice Eight boat took first in its heat with a time of 7:04.20. The Novice Four boat placed third with a time of 8:30.91.
