LAWRENCE, Kan. – Battling cold temperatures and a blistering wind at Memorial Stadium, Kansas senior Alena Krechyk opened up the 86th annual Kansas Relays for KU competing in the women’s hammer throw. Krechyk turned in her top mark of the season at 67.34 meters (220’11”) on her way to finishing fourth and was the top collegiate competitor in the field.

Krechyk, who was competing against several former Olympians in the event, made it into the finals despite fouling on her first two throws of the meet. She got a mark on her third and final preliminary toss, throwing the hammer 67.03 meters (219’11”) which put her in fourth place heading into the finals. Krechyk again fouled on her first two throws in the finals, before unleashing her best throw of the day on her sixth attempt.

Krechyk’s mark of 67.34 meters (220’11”) moves her into second place in the NCAA rankings in 2013 and to the top of the Big 12 standings.

In addition to Krechyk’s performance in the field, the Jayhawks saw success on the track as Thursday evening marked the Distance Carnival portion of the Kansas Relays.

Sophomore Evan Landes recorded his first career win taking the 5,000 meters title with a time of 14:27.42. Landes, whose time ranks eighth in the Big 12 Conference this season, led a trio of top 10 finishers for KU in the event as sophomore James Wilson finished in seventh place with his time of 14:47.79 and senior Josh Baden came in eighth place clocking in at 14:55.30.
