April 19, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the third time this season, Kansas and Wichita State will continue their in-state rivalry as Wednesday the two schools will square off at Hoglund Ballpark in a 7 p.m. match-up.

The teams split the first two games of the series, with Kansas using a two-home run performance from junior center fielder Gus Milner to down the Shockers, 13-6, in Lawrence on April 6, before falling to Wichita State, 5-1, on April 13 at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. The final game of the series will take place in Wichita on May 4.

Milner has been the Jayhawks’ leading hitter this season against the Shockers, holding a .625 (5-for-8) batting average at the plate with six runs batted in. Senior first baseman Andy Scholl has also put up impressive numbers in the series, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Scholl drove in the only KU run of April 13’s contest with a solo home run, his third of the season.

Kansas will send senior left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski to the mound on Wednesday, as the Jayhawks plan to shuffle their weekend rotation for the upcoming series against Texas Tech. Zagurski owns a 4-4 record this season and a 4.69 ERA. The Omaha, Neb., native enters the week second in the Big 12 with 74 strikeouts.

Prior to Wednesday’s game in Lawrence, Wichita State hosts Kansas State on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
