April 19, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan.—Kansas will close out the 2012 spring season this weekend, as the Jayhawks travel to Manhattan, Kan., to take on No. 71 Kansas State Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 1 p.m., and is slated to be played outdoors at the Wamego Recreation Complex.
KU brings a 9-11 spring record (0-8 in Big 12 play) into the match, while the Wildcats sit at 7-13 overall (3-5 in the Big 12).
Last Time Out
Kansas tennis won the doubles point, but could not grab a singles point as the Jayhawks fell to the Iowa State Cyclones, 6-1, Sunday in Ames, Iowa.
For the second-straight match, Kansas dominated doubles play. At the top spot, junior Monica Pezzotti and sophomore Dylan Windom defeated ISU’s Maria Maceda and Tessa Lang, 8-5. Sophomore Claire Dreyer and junior Victoria Khanevskaya also notched an 8-6 victory over Jenna Langhorst and Ksenia Pronina at the No. 3 position.
Scouting the Opponent
K-State put an end to its six-match skid last weekend, as the Wildcats carded a pair of 4-3 wins at Iowa State and Missouri. The Wildcats saw three players record 2-0 marks over the weekend, as Petra Niedermayerova, Karla Bonacic and Carmen Borau Ramos each registered unblemished records. Niedermayerova, ranked No. 27 in this week’s Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, has won 15 of her last 19 matches. Bonacic, the No. 101 player in the nation, has won 16 of her last 21 outings and owns a 54-33 (.621) career mark.
Following the weekend, KU will gear up for the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas, April 26-29. Times are to be determined.
