Bergmann Takes Home Javelin Title To Lead Jayhawks At Friday's Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior Heather Bergmann took home the Kansas Relays javelin title for the second-consecutive year, leading the Jayhawks on the third day of action at the 86th annual running of the meet.
“It was a really relaxed me for me and it was great that it was in Lawrence,” said Bergmann. “You come in to every meet wanting to beat your personal best and I didn’t do that, but at the same time I had really good form and technique. That is really important going into the Big 12 meet in two weeks.”
Bergmann, who hails from Concordia, Kan., took the lead on her first throw of the competition and never looked back. Her winning mark of 49.86 meters (163’7″) was more than eight feet farther than the second place finisher.
Behind a strong mile leg from junior Josh Munsch, the KU men’s distance medley relay team took home the title. Munsch was joined by sophomore Reid Buchanan and juniors Dominique Manley and Brendan Soucie for the win. The quartet clocked in at 10:12.96.
Kansas took home a second-place finish in the women’s distance medley relay as freshman Hannah Richardson, senior Taylor Washington, freshman Rhavean King and junior Natalie Becker completed the event in 11:59.52.
The KU men’s 4xmile relay team composed of senior Josh Baden, senior Colin Jokisch, sophomore James Wilson and sophomore Evan Landesjoined forces for a second place finish. The foursome completed the event in 17:34:64.
A pair of Jayhawks placed in the women’s shot put as freshman Anastasiya Muchkayev took home fifth place with her mark of 15.29 meters (50’2″), while junior Jessica Maroszek finished in seventh place with her toss of 15.15 meters (49’9″).
The KU women dominated the 100-meter prelims Friday with senior Paris Daniels turning in the top time of 11.632. Daniels narrowly edged her Jayhawk teammate, freshman Tianna Valentine, who clocked in just .004 seconds slower at 11.636. Seniors Denesha Morris (11.88) and Andrea Geubelle (11.93) also advanced to the 100-meter finals by placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in Friday’s preliminaries. The finals will be run at 1:55 p.m., Saturday.
Morris also advanced to Saturday’s 400 meters final after turning in the second-fastest qualifying time in Friday’s preliminaries. Morris made one lap around the track in 54.96, marking the top time for a Jayhawk so far during the 2013 outdoor season. Sophomore Michael Hester advanced in the men’s 400 meters, clocking in at 49.68. Hester had the seventh-best qualifying time.
Both KU women competing in the 100-meter hurdles advanced to the finals as sophomore Lindsay Vollmer and senior Rebecca Neville each finished in the top eight in the preliminaries Friday morning. Vollmer turned in the top preliminary time clocking in at 14.05, while Neville had the fourth-fastest qualifying time at 14.16. The duo will compete in the finals Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
Sophomore Alisha Keys took third in her preliminary round of the 200 meters with her time of 24.50, which was the sixth-fastest qualifying time. Keys advanced to Saturday’s 200-meter final, which will be run at 9:50 a.m.
Junior Shawn Smith advanced to Saturday’s 200 meters final by recording the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries. Smith clocked in at 22.14 to move on to the finals. Also qualifying for a Saturday final was freshman Nick Ucherek in the 400-meter hurdles. Ucherek was the top finisher in his heat Friday with a time of 55.43.
Kansas advanced both its men’s and women’s 4×100-meter relay teams to Saturday’s final. For the KU women, Daniels, freshman Sydney Conley, Valentine and junior Diamond Dixon passed the baton around in a time of 45.38, claiming the top qualifying time of the prelims. The KU men’s quartet of Smith, senior Kyle Clemons, junior DeMario Johnson and sophomore Michael Hester advanced with the top qualifying time of 41.04.
Also advancing to Saturday’s finals were both the Jayhawk men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay squads. The women’s quartet of Morris, Dixon, Washington and Daniels completed the four laps in 3:42.40, garnering the top qualifying time entering finals. Johnson, Hester, sophomore Michael Stiglerand Clemons combined for a time of 3:10.52, which also marked the top qualifying time moving into the finals.
