Kansas Tennis Set for Rematch with Missouri at Big 12 Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas women’s tennis looks to revenge a 5-2 loss to Missouri earlier this season when it travels to Norman, Okla. to face the Tigers in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championship. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 23.Kansas closed out the regular season with a 10-12 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Big 12. Kansas, the No. 9 seed, will face Missouri (8-11, 4-7) as the No. 8 seed. The Jayhawks are led by sophomore Maria Martinez’ 7-4 singles record in conference play and the 7-3 Big 12 doubles record of Edina Horvath and Ekaterina Morozova.

In the March 22 match against Missouri, KU entered singles action needing four wins to pull off the dual victory after Edina Horvath and Kate Morozova earned the only doubles win. Sophomore Maria Martinez dropped the first singles match of the day, but senior Yuliana Svistun notched the first KU singles win at the No. 3 position. Horvath followed with a win at the one spot to even the team score at 2-2. Erin Wilbert and Morozova both battled, but couldn’t hold on, surrendering the next two singles matches to seal the MU victory.

Last season the Jayhawks entered the Big 12 Championship as the No. 5 seed, defeating No. 12 seed Iowa State before falling to Colorado, 5-0, in the quarterfinals. Kansas finished the season with an overall record of 10-13.

The winner of Thursday’s dual will go on to face No. 1 Baylor, which is ranked fifth nationally and is undefeated in conference play. The second-round match will take place on Friday, April 24 at 9 a.m. Kansas fell to the Bears, 5-2, in its regular season match-up.
