Kansas Women's Golf in Eighth after Big 12 Championship Second Round

April 20, 2013

RHODES, Iowa – Kansas sophomore Minami Levonowich shot a 1-over 73 and junior Meghan Potee a 3-over 75 to lead the Jayhawks on day two of the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship at The Harvester Golf Club here Saturday. The third and final round of the conference championship will be Sunday on the par-72 course.

On a day in which every team recorded better scores than Friday’s round hampered by extremely cold and windy conditions, Kansas improved by 18 strokes, carding a 16-over 304 after Friday’s 322. Unfortunately, two other Big 12 teams improved more than KU putting the Jayhawks in eighth place at 626 (+50) heading into Sunday’s final round. Kansas entered Saturday’s second round tied for fifth.

“We got off to a tough start but finished strong,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We need to go out tomorrow and be patient and smart.”

After recording a 2-under 286 Saturday, Baylor leads the nine-team field with a two-round 605 (319-286, +29), one stroke ahead of host Iowa State (606, 320-286) and Oklahoma State (606, 317-289). Kansas is two strokes behind seventh-place Texas (327-297—624, +48) and 30 shots ahead of ninth-place Kansas State (350-306—656, +80).

Levonowich carded two birdies and three bogies on the front nine Saturday. The Houston native then recorded nine pars on the back nine to shoot KU’s low round of the day. Levonowich improved seven strokes from Friday’s opening-round 80 and is tied with KU freshman teammate Yupaporn ‘Mook’ Kawinpakorn for 11th at 153 (+9) in the 45-golfer field. Kawinpakorn shot a 4-over 76 on Friday and a 77 on Saturday. Day one leader, Baylor’s Lauren Taylor, shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to continue to lead at 142 (-2). Taylor is three strokes ahead of Iowa State’s Punpaka Phuntumabamrung who also shot a 4-under 68 Saturday and is at 145 (+1).

Potee had a KU-best eight-stroke improvement from day one to day two with her 3-over 75 on Saturday after shooting an 83 Friday. Like Levonowich, Potee carded two birdies on Saturday and is tied for 29th overall at 158 (+14). KU junior Thanuttra ‘Fhong’ Boonraksasat improved four strokes from her first round with a 7-over 79 Saturday. Boonraksasat is tied for 33rd overall at 162 (+10). Jayhawk senior Audrey Yowell shot an 82 Saturday and is in 41st at 165 (+23) heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Kansas will be grouped with Texas and Kansas State for Sunday’s third and final round with tee times starting at 8 a.m. One can follow the 2013 Big 12 Championship at golfstat.com
