Kansas Falls to Top-Ranked Foes at Natoma Invite

April 20, 2013

GOLD RIVER, Calif.—Kansas rowers faced their biggest tests of the season on Saturday as the Jayhawks rowed against four teams ranked in the top 20. The Jayhawks faced the stiff competition at the Lake Natoma Invite.

In the morning session, KU rowed against top-ranked Southern California and No. 12 Notre Dame. The teams faced off in the Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight. The speed of the nationally-ranked teams showed as KU finished third in all three events. The Trojans won each race.

“It was a big challenge,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “We raced better this afternoon. Exposing the team to the best squads in the country is going to pay off. We already adapted and raced better in the afternoon. We are looking forward to tomorrow.”

In the evening session, KU rowed against No. 9 Stanford and No. 17 Washington State. Washington State opened with a win in the Varsity Four. Stanford came back to win both the Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight. KU finished third in all three races.

“We wanted to come and learn and apply that to what we are doing,” Catloth added.

KU will close the Natoma Invite tomorrow with races against Sacramento State and Conference USA foe, Tulsa.
