Kansas Earns First Big 12 Win of Season Over West Virginia, 6-1

April 20, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas broke a 21-match Big 12 losing streak Friday, defeating West Virginia, 6-1, at Jayhawk Tennis Center to win its first conference dual event since April 2011.

“We’re just relieved with the level the girls brought out here today, and the passion and competitiveness we had,” coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “A 6-1 win over a talented team such as West Virginia feels good. We know that we can compete with these schools in the Big 12 and hopefully we can keep building on it for Sunday against Iowa State.”

West Virginia was short-handed one player and forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches, giving KU a 1-0 advantage to start the match. The Jayhawks then took one of the two doubles matches before winning four of five in singles to move to 1-7 in conference play this year (9-9 overall).

At the No. 2 doubles position, junior Dylan Windom and freshman Maria Jose Cardona defeated WVU’s Vivian Tsui and Emily Mathis, 8-4.

In singles, Kansas sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña defeated Hailey Barrett, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), at the No. 1 position, while Cardona beat WVU’s Wkttesh Chahal, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 match. KU junior Paulina Los routed Mathis, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot, and freshman Anastasija Trubica knocked-off Irinka Toidze of the Mountaineers, 6-2, 6-2.

The Jayhawks will return to action on Sunday for Senior Day when they face Iowa State for its regular season finale.

“We’ll kind of have a little hit-around tomorrow,” Hall-Holt said. “Not much, just fine-tune and make sure we can get them up and moving so we’ll be ready for Sunday.”
