Texas Tech Nips Kansas, 3-1

LUBBOCK, Texas –
Juniors Brock Simpson and Joe Servais each collected two hits, while the Jayhawk pitching staff held Texas Tech to just three runs on six hits. However, the Kansas baseball team once again fell short, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Red Raiders Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Kansas falls to 19-25 overall and 5-12 in Big 12 play, while TTU improves to 24-16 and 7-9 in the conference.
KU actually outhit the Red Raiders, 8-6, but could only manage one run. The Jayhawks have been held to two runs or less in each of their last four contests.
Texas Tech put up three runs in the bottom of the second on Doug Thennis’ two-run triple to the right-center gap. Thennis scored the third run of the inning on Kyle Martin’s RBI ground out.
Kansas came back with a run in the top of the third. Third baseman Matt Berner, who was making his first start against a conference opponent this season, led off the inning with a ground rule double down the left field line. The extra base hit was Berner’s first of the season.
He scored on Robby Price’s RBI double to right. It was the freshman’s 22nd run batted in of the season.
KU junior starting pitcher Zach Ashwood pitched well, allowing just three runs on three hits over four innings. Junior Andres Esquibel came on and held the Red Raiders scoreless on three hits over the final four innings. The 6-foot-2 righty has not allowed a run in his last 10 1/3 innings of work.
Simpson and Servais led the offense with two hits each.
The Jayhawks will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
