Softball Adds Signee to 2010-11 Team

April 21, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas softball head coach Megan Smith announced the signing of Kristin Martinez to a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Kansas beginning in the 2010-11 academic year.

A left-handed pitcher, Martinez compiled a 0.54 ERA in 2009 to help lead O’Connell College Preparatory to a state championship. During her senior season, the Texas City, Texas native was named district MVP and to the all-tournament team.

Prior to O’Connell, Martinez spent two years at Texas City High School where she garnered first team all-district honors both seasons while helping the Stingarees to a regional championship in 2007.

“We are extremely excited to have Kristin and her family join the Jayhawk softball family,” said Smith. “Kristin comes from a highly respected travel program having played for the Impact Gold under coach KC Jackson. She has the ability to step in immediately and make an impact for our program. She has great movement on her pitches and she does a great job of controlling hitters. Adding Kristin to our 2010 signees will make the class even stronger. We are looking forward to the impact that the 2010 class will have both on the softball field and in the classroom.”

Martinez joins six other signees to the 2010-11 team. Kendra Cullum (Conroe, Texas), Colleen Hohman (Naperville, Ill.), Elsa Moyer (Kirkland, Wash.), Ashley Newman (Salina, Kan.), Ashley Spencer (Arkansas City, Kan.) and Laura Vickers (Olathe, Kan.) will also join the Jayhawk softball team next season.
