Jayhawks Top Second Novice Eight at Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Kansas rowing team competed on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn., Saturday, against host No. 17 Minnesota and Boston University. The Jayhawks took first in the Second Novice Eight topping Minnesota.

The Second Novice Eight boat comprised of coxswain Ashton Hiebert, Kelly Stromberg, Allison Watkins, Brittany Katz, Ashley Hughes, Becca Labat, Allison Clark, Kim Hughes and Callie Owen, took first clocking a time of 6:59.6, five-tenths of a second in front of Minnesota (7:00.12). Kansas finished second behind Minnesota (6:42.2) in the First Novice Eight with a time of 6:50.70.

In the Varsity Races, Kansas placed fourth in the First Varsity Four following three Minnesota boats with a time of 7:39.9. The First Varsity Eight saw Kansas notch a third-place time of 6:25.02 after Minnesota (6:11.77) and Boston (6:16.87). The Jayhawks also finished third in the Second Varsity Eight with a time of 6:55.28.

“I thought we raced well against high quality opponents,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “We will now look to the Big 12 Invitational next weekend, and are very excited about hosting Kansas State and Texas.”

The Jayhawks host the Big 12 Invitational in Kansas City on Sunday, April 30.
