Tuesday Competition Frozen at Big 12 Championship

April 23, 2013

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Due to the weather conditions at Prairie Dunes, Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship play scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled. Tuesday’s round will be scrapped and play will resume Wednesday at noon with the completion of the second round, and a final round to follow.

A full spectrum of weather conditions created hurdles for the tournament’s opening rounds Monday, including an hour lightning delay during the first 18 holes and suspension of play near the end of the second round due to high winds and darkness. Texas, one of three teams to complete all 36 holes Monday, led the field with a score of 290-281—571 (+11) and Longhorn golfer Brandon Stone was the individual leader at 3-under 137.

Kansas senior Chris Gilbert shot a first-round-best 69 to lead the field after 18 holes and sat in third place, with chance for birdie waiting on the 17th green near the end of the second round. Kansas was trapped on the course with late arriving high winds along with six other teams before play was suspended and was tied for eighth with Iowa State at 34-over with a hole to play. The Jayhawks were still just seven strokes from fourth-place Baylor (+27), behind Kansas State (+29), Oklahoma (+30), Texas Tech (+31) and tied with Iowa State (+34).
