LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Meghan Gockel shot a two-over-par 75 on Friday to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a fourth place finish after round one at the Big 12 Championship. Gockel is currently tied for sixth place individually. Two other Jayhawks finished among the top 20 individuals after day one at The Rawls Course.

“I thought we played well today,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “It was really windy and warm but it died down in the afternoon. I think we are in a good position, but we just have to keep chipping away at it.”

Joining Gockel amongst the individual leaders were sophomores Meghna Bal, who shot a 77 to tie for 11th, and Sydney Wilson, who is tied for 17th after shooting a 78. Rounding out the lineup for KU were junior Emily Powers and sophomore Grace Thiry, who each shot rounds of 82 to tie for 39th.

“Meghan played really steady,” said O’Neil. “I was proud of her. She really works good on this course.”

Oklahoma State has a nine stroke lead over second place Texas A&M after the Cowgirls shot a 295 on Friday. Leading the way for OSU was Caroline Hedwall, whose three-under-par round of 70 was good for first place individually.

Round two is set to tee off on Saturday at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the Big 12 Championship can be found at golfstat.com. Check back to kuathletics.com for results and a complete recap following the conclusion of round two.
