Kansas Wins First Novice Eight at Minnesota

April 24, 2010

ST. PAUL, Minn.—Kansas rowing wrapped up its final competition before the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, April 24, at Minnesota on the Mississippi River. The Jayhawks won the First Novice Eight with a time of 7:00.8 to the Golden Gophers 7:06.2.

“We’re pleased with the novice,” said head coach Rob Catloth. “The First Novice Eight are the first recruiting class with the new boathouse.”

Kansas had a lead in the Second Novice Eight, but caught a crab—similar to a fumble in football in the way that it changes momentum—and fell behind and could not recover.

Facing some adversity a week before the Big 12 Championship will keep the team focused headed into the races in Oklahoma City, Okla., next weekend.

“It motivates us a little bit, but we’ve been motivated for it,” Catloth said. “We have been talking about the Big 12s all year. Our year is defined by the Big 12s.”

Kansas will face Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas next Saturday, May 1, in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the Big 12 Championship.
