Kansas to Host 2012 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship

April 25, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s golf will host its second Big 12 Championship at Lawrence Country Club (par 70, 6038 yards) April 27-29 as the Jayhawks welcome a talented field, highlighted by seven programs ranked among the top 50 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.

Free to the general public, the 2012 Big 12 Championships will be a 54-hole event played over three days. One round will be played each day and tee times begin at 8 a.m. off of the first tee. Texas A&M is this year’s front-runner coming in at No. 16 nationally, just ahead of No. 17 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Baylor.

Kansas will be paired with Missouri on Friday, teeing off at 10:40 a.m. The Jayhawk lineup will consist of senior Katy Nugent, junior Audrey Yowell, sophomores Thanuttra Boonraksasat and Meghan Potee and freshman Gabby DiMarco. Head coach Erin O’Neil is ready to take on hosting the Big 12 Championship with full force.

“We are very excited to host conference this year and we are ready for the challenge,” Coach O’Neil said. “The course is in great condition and local knowledge should be very helpful for us this week.”

Boonraksasat has been the top performer all season, averaging 76.4 strokes per round. The sophomore’s top finish this spring came at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational where she tied for fourth thanks to a consistent 54-hole total of 221 (74-74-73).

Nugent sits right behind Boonraksasat with a 76.9 stroke average due to a strong spring season. The Wichita, Kan., native’s best performance came at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational where she claimed runner-up honors behind a career-low 68 in the final round.

Kansas looks to take advantage of hosting the championship but still knows smart play will be vital for them to climb the leader board. Coach O’Neil knows that good decisions make all the difference at Lawrence Country Club.

“Our goal this week will be to fully commit to each shot,” Coach O’Neil said. “We need to play with confidence, and be smart. Making good decisions is an important part of playing well at LCC.”
