LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas swimmers are ready and rested heading into their weekend meets in Topeka, Kan., and Auburn, Ala. The team will be split up into two squads, with seven student-athletes competing in the Jimi Flowers Spring Splash (April 27-29) at Auburn and another seven to hit the waters at the Voorhees Maxfield Invitational in Topeka, Sat. April 28th.
“This will be a chance for them to focus on their one or two events that they want to qualify for trials,” Head Coach Clark Campbell explained.
Campbell and his staff have already seen two of their current swimmers qualify for Olympic Trials in a total of four separate events. Senior Stephanie Payne earned trial worthy times in the 200 fly and the 400 IM during the 2011 summer swim season, while junior Brooke Brull joined her teammate in the 200 IM and 200 back this spring.
Both weekend meets will be conducted in long course format (meters) as opposed to short course (yards), which KU competes in during the collegiate season. This Coach Campbell thinks will work toward his team’s advantage.
“Short course swimming is more about skills, starts and turns, while long course is about how strong of a swimmer you are, so our training has reflected that,” he said. “I think long course does play to one of our strengths because we are a pretty strong team and finish races well.”
As a whole, the Jayhawks head into the weekend with five past, current or future team members going to Omaha for Olympic Trials (June 25-July 2), but will be looking to add more events and additional swimmers into the mix.
“The whole goal is to have as many Jayhawk caps as we can at trials and we have some swimmers that are looking really good,” Campbell thought.
